I was averse to seeing Shopgirl because of Steve Martin. Years ago I saw a play he wrote, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, and came away thinking it would never have been produced if it hadn't been for Martin's name. I've been wary of his work ever since, and a movie starring him and based on his novel just seemed way too risky.

Two words: L.A. Story.

(Or is that three words? Eh, whatever.)

See, I loved Picasso at the Lapin Agile.

Also: Sofia Coppola setting her Mary Sue up with Bill Murray: not creepy. Steve Martin setting his Mary Sue up with Claire Danes (or literary character of similar age): creepy.
