I'm not sure if that's better or worse than the time I spent in the British Library transcribing handwritten 18th-century letters into MS Word. At least they didn't care how many folders I took out of the box.

What an interesting entry! I'm a librarian, and am aware of archives, of course, but I've never worked with archival material. I do have a "someday" project that likely will require working in archives at some point, but it won't be the super old, super fragile stuff. I hope the collection I want to use (the De Grummond collection of children's lit in Mississippi) will allow digital cameras -- although I believe you as to how tiring that must be!
