The biggest decision I had to make during the holiday weekend was what kind of ears I wanted. Gold and shiny? Gold and sequined? Black with a Minnie bow? Black with a bow and miniature Santa hat? Pink with flowers? Blue and yellow tie-dye?
In the end, I went with the classic Mouseketeer. Black, simple, small red logo on front, and (most importantly) my name stitched on the back. I wanted ears because I had ears when I was eight, and when I was eight, I had the plain black ones. And besides, I like to keep things plain and simple.
Yes, we did go to the Land of the Mouse for Thanksgiving weekend. Matt's younger sister is working there this fall, in an internship program that runs through early January, and his family was heading to Orlando to spend the holiday with her. We arrived very early Wednesday morning, and left late-afternoon Sunday, and we did not set foot off of Disney property at any point inbetween, and I don't remember the last time I've had that much fun on vacation. Seriously. Huge fun. Exhausting fun, but fun. (The brilliant thing here, by the way is that we got to the parks early every day, so we really almost never waited for rides. Thursday morning, we did Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Haunted Mansion, and Pirates of the Carribbean, all before ten-thirty in the morning. Each of those rides tends to have at least a half-hour or hour long wait, if you go later in the day.) It's almost a cliche at this point, but Disney really does know how to make a good ride.
I'd been worried that it would be weird to spend Thanksgiving at a theme park, but it wasn't actually weird at all. I haven't been with my own family for Thanksgiving since 1999, after all. (And I miss them, more than I'd have expected when I first moved out here. Every Thanksgiving I call my aunt's house, where everyone is gathered for dinner, and they pass the phone around and I talk to all of my cousins, and while it's kind of funny to have a long string of nearly-identical short conversations, it's also kind of nice.) We had turkey dinner, so that was right, and we were at least with Matt's family, so that was right too. Later that night, we sat out on a terrace at the World Showcase and drank champagne (from the France pavilion) and watched a fireworks show, so the holiday was suitably festive.
And I've got ears, with my name stitched on the back. I feel pretty good about the world.
